After completing the Comprehensive ICD-10-AM Training by Experts in Industry.

You should have greater knowledge and skills in

  • Understanding and applying the conventions and instructions used in ICD-10-AM and ACHI
  • Identifying and applying ICD-10-AM and ACHI edition changes
  • Interpreting and applying the Australian Coding Standards
  • Selecting appropriate conditions and procedures for coding according to the Australian Coding Standards and the conventions of ICD-10-AM and ACHI
  • Identifying the principal diagnosis for an admission according to the rules of ICD-10-AM and the Australian Coding Standards
  • Assigning complete and accurate codes from ICD-10-AM and ACHI for diseases, conditions, injuries and procedures

ACHI consists of a tabular list of interventions and accompanying alphabetic index-Procedure Coding

The Australian Coding Standards have been developed with the objective of satisfying sound coding conventions for use with ICD-10-AM and ACHI. They apply to all public and private hospitals in Australia. The ongoing revision of the Australian Coding Standards ensures that they reflect changes in clinical practice, clinical classification amendments and various user requirements of inpatient data collections.Clinical coders convert information from patients' medical records into alphanumeric codes according to a health classification system. These codes form part of data collection which is used for research, funding and health care planning. Clinical coders should be able to work as part of a team, have good communication skills and be interested in healthcare, disease processes and procedure developments. No previous experience in clinical coding is necessary when considering this career pathway. However previous experience in nursing, medicine, biological sciences, other health services or a health-related clerical background such as medical secretary or reception work may be beneficial.
